Photo by @Cristina Mittermeier // Seagrass surrounding a lone conch shell sways to the rhythm of the tide in Mosquitia Reef in Honduras. Coastal communities depend on this grassland for protection from storm surges, while the rest of the planet benefits from the service it performs mitigating climate change. This seagrass meadow works as a blue carbon sink, capturing and “locking up” carbon dioxide from the atmosphere that would otherwise contribute to global warming. Compared to terrestrial forests, areas of marine plants like this can store more carbon faster and longer, making them incredibly important ecosystems to protect. #FollowMe at @Cristina Mittermeier for more photos from some of our planet’s most essential ecosystems. #bluecarbon #ocean #Honduras #climatechange #underwaterphotography
