Photo by @beverlyjoubert | These are two of 87 rhinos that have been moved by #RhinosWithoutBorders from poaching hotspots in South Africa to secure locations in Botswana. The illegal trade in rhino horn has been devastating with around three rhinos killed for their horns every day—well over 1,000 every year. It's a strange trade, one that has reared its head again in recent years: As rhino horn has uses in cultural 'medicine', it is increasingly being seen as a status symbol. The horns are made from keratin, the same as hooves and fingernails, and have no medicinal properties. But the demand has led to a massive surge in poaching, and a huge proportion of the money allocated for protected areas is being used to combat this. Hopefully the 100 rhinos that are being moved as part of this project will remain safe and form the basis for strong, genetically diverse new populations, while poaching and the demand for horn is tackled.
