We're on trend for the Pantone Color of the Year 2019: #LivingCoral. These coral specimens are from @smithsoniannmnh's collection, 3D scanned by @smithsonian3d.
The team scanned a selection of reef-dwelling species that tell stories about reef health and history. Many are holotypes—the single example used to describe a species—which have a great deal of research value.
To digitize the specimens, the team took about 300 photos of each that they stitched together to make a 3D representation. They're working to process the data and share tours and information about the corals online this spring. #COY2019
