Your phone’s battery may die in extreme cold. But you might not know that your electric car’s battery can give out when you need it most, too.

The lithium-ion batteries used in most electric cars are most efficient at about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. And the owners of these vehicles discovered this unfortunate truth during last week’s polar vortex.

In extreme cold, the range that shows up on the car’s instrument panel is, at best, an estimate. While it can vary from vehicle to vehicle, experts and owners alike report that operating in subzero temperatures can cut range by as much as half, requiring twice as much energy to get from point A to B.

You can read more on the issue with electric vehicles, as well as some tips on how to prevent a disaster, at the link in bio. *
