Photos by @CarltonWard | The Suwannee River Delta is one of my favorite places on earth. I shot these photos during a recent scouting flight with Hyper Heli and friends from @ナショナルジオグラフィック. A few miles north of Cedar Key and 90 miles north of Tampa, the fabled Suwannee River spreads its freshwater branches into the Gulf of Mexico to form a nationally important estuary. The Suwannee flows 240 miles, from its headwaters in the Okefenokee Swamp of southern Georgia, gathering water from numerous springs along its way to the gulf. With a Okefenokee and Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuges protecting each end, the river is a vital link in the Florida Wildlife Corridor. Keeping the watershed clean is also essential for the clam and oyster fisheries in the estuary downstream. The region is a great reminder for how all lands and waters are interconnected—in Florida and throughout the world.
