Photos by @Fritzphotos | Rescued from an illegal farm in China that harvests bile from bear gall bladders, an Asiatic black bear, also known as a moon bear, undergoes an ultrasound checkup and nail trimming at Animals Asia in Chengdu, China. The bears sustain life-threatening injuries and infection while confined to cages for years as bile is drained from their gall bladders. The bile is prized for its ursodeoxycholic acid, which is sought for use in traditional Chinese medicine. Animals Asia rescues the bears from these farms, then rehabilitates them at the sanctuaries it operates in China and Vietnam. The bears live out their lives at the sanctuaries and are buried in the cemetery there.
Animals Asia was founded by the heroic effort of Jill Robinson in 1998. A synthetic version of ursodeoxycholic acid is available and is being used in Chinese medicine and in tests at the Visible Heart Lab in Minnesota.
