In @nytbooks | “I wanted this space to represent blackness and its vastness but I wanted it to be as inviting as any other bookstore,” said Rosa Duffy, a visual artist who opened the bookstore, For Keeps, in #Atlanta last November. At @forkeepsbooks, a store which celebrates black identity, there’s a lot that’s not for sale. But you’re welcome to spend all day here reading the #books. That’s the point. “I want people to have as many interactions with them as they can,” Rosa said. But, of course, there are also books for sale. While in New York for college, Rosa noticed that books on black history were often limited to one shelf. “I always thought that if I ever had the chance I wanted to expand that little shelf somehow,” she said. The chance came when she moved back to Atlanta in 2016. Rent was affordable. Interest in black identity was on the rise, and she had the time and means to make it work. Now, Rosa thinks the store has been successful due to the community’s commitment to black history. “People love themselves as black people and they only want to know more,” she said. “Atlanta encourages you to be as black as you can be.” @johnathonkelso shot this photo of Rosa at For Keeps.
