Confession time: I have been a single use plastic fiend since my emergency surgery ? As someone who is so passionate about fighting ocean plastic, it’s a bit of a headf*ck if I’m honest ??‍♀️ The main culprit is wound dressings. When I first got back from the Maldives and my wound split open, I had to change my dressings twice a day. Each change came with numerous pieces of single use non recyclable plastic and packaging. ? Luckily now I change my dressings every 2 days, but there’s still a large quantity of waste produced ??‍♀️ However, after a brief period of feeling guilty I came to a place of acceptance. I’ve realised ➡️ This is short term. I won’t be producing this waste forever. ➡️ This is my health, I need to do this so I can be a healthy and strong sustainability advocate in the future. ➡️ I can be sustainable in other ways such as eating a plant focused diet, buying packaging free veggies, using my reusable items & building upon @staywildswim ➡️ Ultimately, I can only do my best in the situation I’m in. That’s all any of us can do, our very best ?? Whether you work in the medical industry or are recovering yourself, don’t feel guilty for the plastic you’re consuming. It’s necessary for our health. Instead, channel that energy into other sustainable efforts ?? #ecoguilt #sustainability #ecofriendly #singleuseplastic #marineplastic

sheldrakesarah Going for my 18th abdominal surgery in a few weeks, it makes me cringe with all the single use plastics that 'I' as one patient creates. @zannavandijk any tips for helping my damaged scarred abdominal heal and feel healthy. jamievjamie I am nurse and it breaks my heart that hospitals dont have better practices in place atleast to seperate recyclables etc. I would love if hospitals were more considerate of the waste problems and did their best where they can! Hopefully one day i will help drive change where i work!

toynierica I’ve been a nurse student since August, and I’m shocked to see how much waste we produce just by learning procedures, in school alone. I can’t even imagine how much waste a hospital produces every day. And much of it is not even for any good.

mrs.danielle.duke Thank you for this. I’m a RN and I struggle daily with the necessary but inordinate amount of single use plastic I use in a shift. I like your fresh perspective on it. I wish you a smooth recovery 😘

coltmanamanda It’s all about infection control and unfortunately single use items are best practice and the only way to avoid infection ( as well as hand washing etc etc ) so never feel guilty x
