“I am a mixture” said #FridaKahlo. Her mother, Matilde Calderón y González, was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and was of Indigenous and Spanish descent. Her father, Guillermo Kahlo, was born in Germany and emigrated to Mexico when he was eighteen. Kahlo shared an exceptionally close relationship with her father, a professional photographer known for documenting Mexico’s colonial architectural heritage. Through sitting for him and assisting him on shoots, Kahlo developed an eye for poses and angles which would later feature in her own work. The vibrant clothing that would come to characterize Kahlo’s style would have been familiar to her from a young age through her mother, who hailed from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. #FridaKahloBKM⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⠀

“Soy una mezcla” dijo Frida Kahlo. Su madre, Matilde Calderón y González, nació en Oaxaca, en el sur de México, en 1876, y era de ascendencia indígena y española. Su padre, Guillermo Kahlo, nació en Alemania en 1872 y emigró a México cuando tenía dieciocho años de edad. Kahlo tenía una muy estrecha relación con su padre, un fotógrafo conocido por su documentación del patrimonio arquitectónico colonial de México. A través de posar para él y ayudarle en sus sesiones fotográficas, Kahlo desarrolló un buen ojo para posturas y ángulos que luego aparecerían en su propia obra. La vestimenta vibrante que llegaría a caracterizar el estilo de Kahlo, habría sido familiar a ella a través de su madre, quien era originaria del Istmo de Tehuantepec.⁣⠀
