Salvador Dalí’s ‘Composition à la jambe’ is a preparatory drawing for a Bryan’s Hosiery advertisement, published in the March 1945 issue of #Vogue. During the 1940s Dalí worked with the titans of the fashion industry, at a time when surrealism had passed from a radical and revolutionary movement into a final state of modishness. With the legs set against a background landscape populated with organic forms and classic Dalinian imagery, the composition exemplifies the artist’s ingenuity and technical brilliance in the face of American mass culture.
