Yesterday I asked people for their definition of ‘communication’ and what it means to them. I received so many thoughtful, interesting responses and while I couldn’t respond to each one, I wanted to thank everyone so much for their engagement.

Communication, specifically inter- and intrapersonal, has fascinated me for a long time. The ways that we do (or do not) understand each other and, just as importantly, the ways that we do (or do not) understand ourselves is so strongly influenced by styles of communication that come naturally to us. But while our styles are natural, they are not necessarily intentional. We are influenced by culture, upbringing, life experience, family, friends, etc. Our styles of communication reflect not only who we are, but where we are in life at that particular moment.

I speak to everyone when I say: Given YOUR unique life experiences and events that brought you to where you are right now, it makes perfect sense that you are the person you are today. Just as it makes sense for someone else to be the person they are, given THEIR unique life experiences. With that in mind, the horizons of understanding are expanded tenfold. We can view another person’s position in life with less judgement and more compassion.

This is just the tip of the iceberg on possibilities that effective communication can present. I’m excited to continue these types of dialogue with everyone!! Thanks again for nerding out with me ??

milky.chai A favorite book related to this topic: The Information, by James Gleick. It’s about the history of information technologies, from African drum communication to Morse code & to today. What’s fascinating about it is to recognize some the the historic challenges of these technologies that we still bump into today, the loss of clarity/fidelity, and how they overcame it.

dct8 It’s funny how things such as your post surface and present themselves at the right time. Life with someone who has meant a lot to me has been rather rough to say the least. This post was the perfect reminder for me of life perspectives and being respectful of where others may be coming from.
