Photo by @Richard Barnes | Working on a story on "insect design," I photographed this interactive sculptural piece, titled "The Hive," in London's Kew Gardens. Conceived by the U.K. artist Wolfgang Buttress, it's an immersive sound and light experience that responds to the activity inside a real hive in the garden connected electronically to the sculpture.
The structures that insects create—bee hives, termite mounds, ant hills—are inspiring scientists, architects, engineers, and artists to adapt techniques and forms from the insect world to our own built environment. The natural habitats created by insects inform the design and architecture of modern buildings and cities in ways we have yet to fully comprehend and realize. As a photographer who often incorporates architectural elements in his work, I find these insect habitats both highly ordered and functional and simultaneously very beautiful. #insectarchitecture #robdunn #wolfgangbuttress #kewgardens
