Photo by @BrianSkerry | A sperm whale calf, about six months old, swims directly below its mother in the waters of the eastern Caribbean Sea. Sperm whale family units are led by older adult females that researchers believe possess considerable wisdom and knowledge from decades of learning in the sea. Sperm whale clans (groups of family units) have dialects, and individual families devise parenting techniques and other elements that make their culture unique.
