It is much less crowded at night, without the throngs of tourists and pilgrims that assemble during the day. But there will be fewer people visiting the palace this March, as the Chinese government has restricted foreign tourists from the Tibet Autonomous Region until April 1. March 10 marks the 60th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against the government, and since protests in March of 2008, travel to the region has been restricted for a least a month each year.
