Kevin, a naturalist guide, placed his hat carefully over the impala’s head to avoid too much stress. We found the animal during a long hike through a community-owned reserve in South Africa. In an area surrounded by fences, with no large predators present, a weakened impala like this would suffer for a long time. Although Kevin knew it would be controversial to interfere, as this wasn't allowed according to the park regulations, he followed his heart and brought the animal to a local vet. Kevin's action made me realize that empathy is the starting point for creating a community and taking action. It's the driving force for creating change.
