We have nothing but awe and respect for these giants that are capable of such intelligence, emotions, and strength—and yet will usually tolerate the presence of humans who, as they have seen, are not harmless creatures. With a hunting ban put in place in 2014, elephants have been mostly safe for the past five years in Botswana, and we have watched how stressed herds have relaxed and become less aggressive over the years. They need a lot of space, but they're constantly moving through the landscape, changing locations with the seasons, feeding as they go. However, a white paper handed to the Botswana government in late February 2019 has recommended a resumption in hunting, culling, and the closure of wildlife corridors. There are obviously issues that come with living with large numbers of these animals. However, in order to have an impact on the estimated 132,000 elephants, it would require killing very high numbers pf them, a move that not only will lead to a great deal of trauma in the remaining herds but likely hurt Botswana's lucrative tourism industry. The government is still considering these proposals and undergoing more consultation. #thisismytrophy #elephants #okavango #worthmorealive」3月17日 15時02分 - natgeo
