Photo by @beverlyjoubert | Agriculture is vital for the little-known and secluded Ik tribe who live in the mountains in northern Uganda. Originally from Ethiopia, they moved up into these mountains after the land on which they settled was turned into a national park in the 1960s. Moving out of this known farming and hunting land was a huge blow and led to extreme famine, as it coincided with two years of drought. Their rituals are all centered around the agricultural calendar, and women hold the key to ensuring famine doesn't strike in the same way once again. So much of the work women do, especially rural women, is unpaid and unrecognized. And yet this labor of ordinary, everyday life–the cleaning, the long journeys for water or firewood, the caring for children or grinding of grain, and much more–is immense and indispensable.
