At 71, this Scottish woman has never felt pain or anxiety. Jo Cameron also said that her scars heal quickly and that childbirth felt like “a tickle.” Now scientists know why. In a paper published Thursday in The British Journal of Anaesthesia, researchers attributed Jo’s virtual painlessness to a mutation in a previously unidentified gene. They hope it could lead to the development of new pain treatment. They believe it may also explain her low anxiety and quick healing. “We’ve never come across a patient like this,” said John Wood, the head of the Molecular Nociception Group at @ucl. Though this may sound like a dream, there are downsides: Jo has never felt an “adrenaline rush” and she burns herself quite frequently. But she cannot recall ever feeling depressed or scared. “I am very happy,” she said. @marytrnr shot this photo in Gilsland, Cumbria, England. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
