Speaking in Dance | “I'm 41, the oldest dancer in the company, and when I see Michelle start to drop into the squat, I try to get that energy in that moment: I try to power up,” said @nicholasvanyoung, the associate artistic director of Dorrance Dance. This ensemble section comes toward the end of “SOUNDspace,” part of the company’s season at @nycitycenter starting March 28. “The very first step that you see us doing is a flying riff,” said Michelle Dorrance, or @mashdeez. “Using the toe-heel and then the heel drop on the opposing leg, we’re doing riffs at each other.” What makes it fly is the jump in between. In front are the breakers Ephrat Asherie (Bounce) and Matthew West (Megawatt), but, really, it’s about the strength of the group. “We’re looking across at one another so we feel each other’s energy really clearly, and some people are fierce and gritting their teeth and others are just smiling,” Nicholas told the #nytimes writer @giadk. “It’s like we’re pulling energy from the earth.” @alinarancier made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
