Duke Ellington, Meet Queen Elizabeth.
When this royal meeting took place in 1958, Ellington told the monarch: “She was so inspiring and that something musical would come out of it. She said she would be listening, so I wrote an album for her." A year later he sent a single pressing of “The Queen’s Suite” directly to Buckingham Palace. For her ears only.
It wasn’t until 1976—two years after Elllington’s death—that “The Queen’s Suite” was shared with the world. This weekend our Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra will play as they stop in their World Tour in London.
