Who knew two rodents could be so cute?!? It's hard to believe that these Mongolian gerbils are treated as pests within their home range. While they might not always receive a warm welcome from their human neighbors, this species is what we call “desert tough”,having learned how to survive even in under the most extreme circumstances. This species evolved in the semi-deserts and steppes of Mongolia, an area known for having some of the most dramatic temperature changes (within a 24 hour period) in the world. There, they developed long legs for jumping and running from predators, teeth to deal with hard seeds and plant matter, and water conservation techniques that allow them to survive in the sometimes unpredictable climate. They’ve also developed the ability to create water inside their bodies using dry food or stores of fat! Photo taken @gladysporterzoo.
