‘Di design, plastica e salvare il pianeta’ by #PaoloTamborrini. Only 15 percent is recycled, 25 percent ends up in incinerators and waste-to-energy plants; the remaining 60 percent goes to landfill or, worse, is burned outdoors emitting pollutants or is left in the environment. The 2018 OECD report on plastic waste management is clear, even if the problem isn’t something that happened overnight, but the result of the mismanagement of a synthetic material that began 60 years ago. Yesterday an ingenious all-encompassing solution, today a planetary scourge. The problem must really be seen from a broader perspective: while many objects should be redesigned using materials that are more natural, less polluting or easier to manage in the disposal phase, in other cases plastic is the most appropriate material in terms of functionality and durability. In other words the Plastic Free movement must be contextualized within the bigger environmental question, which cannot be addressed with one-size-fits-all and top-down solutions. One of the big concepts that these years of study of environmental sustainability has developed is that of biodiversity, which extends to the principles of complexity and systematicity. The solutions must therefore be diversified, dynamic and be able to adapt to different territories and to necessary changes. It is essential that the most suitable material be chosen for each object, pushing research towards natural solutions or, if that’s not possible, designing recyclable or renewable artifacts.
