Born in 1960, he is the eldest son of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, and was the first child to be raised by his parents - traditionally, royal children lived separately. After graduating from Gakushuin University, he attended the University of Oxford, and then graduate school in Japan - a first for a member of the Imperial Family. Married to Masako Owada in 1993, their daughter Princess Aiko was born in 2001. Crown Prince Naruhito has expressed his wish to continue his parents’ legacy of maintaining a close relationship and support for the Japanese people, and to being an advocate for peace. The name of the new Reiwa era, is taken from Manyoshu, the oldest existing anthology of Japanese poetry.
