Traditional art never inspired me to become an artist when I was younger. What made a more profound impact on me as a kid and on my practice for the last 30 years were things like cool punk rock t-shirts, album packages, and skateboard graphics. In high school, I started making my own t-shirts or finding t-shirts that were hard to find that represented the culture. So even though this was before @obeyclothing technically existed, t-shirts and clothes have always been an extension of my art practice. Making a t-shirt is a way for me to connect with a broader audience than making a fine art painting. Things have evolved, and the line has grown to incorporate a lot of what's happening in street and youth culture, but I still get the same satisfaction from making t-shirt graphics. Everybody has to get up in the morning and decide what they're going to put on, and I think that can be shallow or it can be meaningful. I try to make t-shirts that I hope appeal the way clothes appeal, but frequently something a little deeper to say.
