Mistaking manatees for mermaids? Maybe if they got the Lisa Frank treatment.
In many languages, “siren” means mermaid—and the scientific order that includes manatees is named Sirenia.
Centuries ago, sailors mistook manatees for mythical creatures, perhaps because they had flat tails and could turn their heads. Also, ocean life back then was still largely a mystery (think of how much we still don't know about the oceans today).
Our @silibraries gave these South American manatees some flair, with a page from an 1880s volume of the journal "Forest and stream" in @biodivlibrary.
