Photo by @daisygilardini | Rockhopper penguins return to their colonies to breed in October. They usually raise two chicks. The young chicks fledge shortly after hatching, in preparation for leaving the colony at the end of February.
After the eggs hatch, the parents alternate time at the nest. During the day, one of the parents is at sea fishing. They return to the nest by late afternoon, to feed their chicks and relieve their partner. Due to rockhopper penguins’ rapid population decrease, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species lists the species as “Vulnerable.” Scientists believe climate change is a major factor in their decline.
