Lord Shiva allowed water to flow through locks of his hair as it fell from the sky to the earth, accumulating as the headwaters of the Ganges River (known to Indians as Ma Ganga, or Mother Ganga). Beginning at the foot of the Gangotri Glacier at 13,200 ft (4,023 m), the Ganges winds 1,500 miles through northern India, supplying water to 500 million people along the way.
