The big fella on my left is 14 year old Geoff Abrams. 6 ft 3 in, 185 pounds of aggressive serve and volley power. In 1992 he won the Boys 14’s triple crown: The Easter Bowl, National Clays, and National Hard Courts and finished ranked #1 in the USA. I unfortunately had to face Geoff in many big tournaments during those tyrannical 12 months. Geoff went undefeated that year except for a lone blemish... On a beautiful morning in Whittier, CA it all came together and I slayed the giant! Miraculously, for 1 hour, my spidery 70 pound frame was able to fight off the booming kickers and pass with laser like precision. In my mind, surely one of the great upsets in sports history. I went straight from the court, trophy in hand, to Knotts Berry Farm to celebrate with rollercoasters and cotton candy. The next morning, I awoke at 7am and sprinted outside in my underwear to grab the Los Angeles Times. The finals results from the big junior tournaments were always printed in the back of the sports section and I couldn’t wait to read my name defeating the legendary Geoff Abrams, 6-0, 6-2. It would prove that it wasn’t a dream! Everyone would now know of my victory! But to my surprise, the newspaper was missing from the driveway. I rushed back inside and asked my parents if they’d picked it up. After strangely avoiding my questions and then trying to hide it behind his back, I pried the sports page from my Dad’s hand. I quickly flipped to the last page, scanned the small print, and found the tennis results. My jaw dropped to read a misprint. WHITTIER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: BOYS 14 - Geoff Abrams defeated Bob Bryan 6-0, 6-0. I immediately broke down into tears. The shock and heartache was unbearable. That was a tough day to say the least...but here I am, 27 years later, setting the record straight! Geoff and I ended up being teammates at Stanford and we won 2 NCAA team titles together. He is now a successful orthopedic surgeon, the head of Sports Medicine at Stanford, and works with the Golden State Warriors and the SF 49er’s.」5月19日 5時50分
