Meet Billy – an Andean bear @parquejaimeduque. This species is often referred to as the spectacled bear because of the rings of light fur around the eyes, which look like a pair of glasses. Very little is known about them, however. In the wild they are very shy and tend to avoid humans. What we do know is that habitat loss is driving these bears out into the open, leading to human encounters. As their habitat shrinks, the bears stray onto farmland, feeding on the crops that replaced their natural diet, and the construction of new roads fragments bear habitat, increasing the risk of collisions with vehicles and poaching. In an effort to protect this gentle giant, Andean bears are now protected by international trade laws, and local people in bear habitats are being educated about the benefits of preserving habitat for the bears, tourism and the protection of water sources. #Nationalbearawarenessweek #gentlegiant #spectacledbear #andeanbear #billy #photoark #savetogether
