During the political and economic chaos of the 1960s, young artists in Italy associated with #ArtePovera rebelled against traditional art making and “high art” by using common everyday “poor” materials. With the sculpture “L’Italia (Italy),” Luciano Fabro turned the familiar boot-shaped map of Italy literally upside down. Fabro created an entire series of sculptures using Italy as his subject, which ranged from paper to gold, and allowed viewers to focus on the materiality of his works. On view now in “Arte Povera: Homage to Amalfi ’68.”
