#MapplethorpeMondays—Robert Mapplethorpe took hundreds of Polaroids between 1970-75, using the instant camera to experiment with subject matter and develop its technique as a photographer. At the time, Mapplethorpe was working mostly in collage using found imagery, but a need for more source material prompted him to take his own pictures instead. These 1973 Polaroids displayed in plastic mounts that Mapplethorpe hand painted are portraits of Candy Darling, an actress and icon of New York City’s downtown queer scene, who starred in several films by Andy Warhol. See this work in “Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now” through July 10 and share your visit using #Mapplethorpe.
