This living ceiling is a Serengeti of the sea, brimming with life, the vulnerable species seeking protection and others seeking a meal. The golden algae forms a dense floating forest that is critical nursery habitat for countless species. Explosive growth of sargassum weed in 2015 and 2018 is likely related to increased nutrient input and climate change. Large rafts at sea provide habitat, cover, and promote life. When the rafts drift ashore, it piles up on beaches, smothering sea turtle nests and creating costly removal problems in tourism centers.
