Photo by @bertiegregory | A male orca exhaling following a harbour porpoise hunt. Known as a transient, this type of orca specializes in hunting marine mammals. Unlike the resident type who are often much more playful and visible at the surface, transients tend to keep a lower profile when hunting. Keeping track of them is often quite tricky as they dive for several minutes at a time and pop up in a totally new direction. That’s why it was extra special when this big male came over to us and parked at the surface for three big breaths. This jet black background was caused by a side light from the sun which lit up the orca, but not the small island behind. In order to protect places and animals like this, we need to conserve 30% of the planet by 2030. #britishcolumbia #photography #wildlife #coast #orca
