This week’s post is from Emily Radkowski, a student at UMass Amherst. Thank you for taking a second of your morning to read and get involved! “My New England woods have walls. I found one the other day, only a few feet high, made of cobblestones, and overgrown with a mossy coat. I doubt that the farmer who laid these stones anticipated that their actions would echo across centuries, that their handiwork would remind every wayfarer that ax and plow once dramatically transformed this landscape from forest to field. Today, our use of fossil fuels transforms our landscapes in staggering ways. We have chopped off the tops of mountains to access coal seams. Petroleum derived plastics litter the oceans and choke marine life. Abandoned gas stations sit unused in almost every town and city on soils contaminated from decades of leaking tanks. Yet, when I see saplings and ferns surrounding stonewalls, I am reminded that our present trajectory is not our destiny. Farmlands have become forests once more. Our ecologies are resilient, but they require our assistance. That is why I fight for just and equitable climate policies because we, like the persistent trees and underbrush of my New England woods, can reclaim our landscapes.”」6月3日 2時15分 - nikkireed
