[part one of four] I’ve taken a lot of time away from here. From the platforms and the feeds. The onslaught has felt exhausting. And as I try to cultivate a deeper and more gentle relationship with myself and my health, the onslaught can feel like an attack. Especially when humans are being attacked. Women, and our rights. Citizens in their places of work. Our government, and sacred institutions, by hostile foreign powers. Our environment, as the science clarifying its demise is purposefully hidden by those who wish to bring it to its knees for short-term profit, forgetting the longterm consequence that will affect us all, no matter what gold we’ve hoarded. It feels like a lot. And I feel so incredibly lucky that as this weight felt unbearable, it was time for @mountainfilm. I am so thankful.

The theme of this year’s festival was equity. The stories shared were those that committed to highlight and honor those who are so often othered in the world. To learn at the feet of these characters, these very real people, who leapt off the screen and into my mind and heart — who now own pieces of that innermost real estate forever — was an education and a reckoning. An awakening and a reaffirming. A reminder of how much there is to be done, and of how many good people are out there doing as much as they can, and more, and inviting us along.

@changinggamedoc introduced me to three brave, beautiful, high school athletes. Each of these kids is trans. Each of these kids is made of more courage and heart and determination than I can fathom. I cheered. I wept. I laughed. And I know that everyone who sees this film will do the same, and likewise be ready to fight for these kids. What they face is complex, and differing policies state to state make their experiences no easier. We can do better. @alpha.trans, @sarahrose_trans, & @andrayayearwood thank you for your love and hugs.

@fireonthehill tells the story of the Cowboys of South Central LA. I grew up riding horses, and grew up hearing about the Cowboys in South Central and Compton. I finally got to know them this year. We shared stories and hugs. And I could not be more grateful for the warm welcome I received. [cont’d]
