今日の和菓子:夏の夢

旧暦6月30日に執り行われていた神事「夏越の祓(なごしのはらえ)」で暑気払いとして食べられていた氷。
高価な氷に変わり、氷の破片に似せたお菓子を作ろうと庶民が考え誕生したのが、京都で六月に食べる「水無月」だとか。当時の人々にとって、夏の氷は夢のような存在だったんだろうなぁ。そんな貴重な氷のカケラをイメージした錦玉と淡雪羹の和菓子です。

今日の和菓子:Summer Dream

In this month, the signature wagashi is “Minazuki” (水無月) which is regarded as a “Nagoshiharae” (夏越祓) to ward off bad luck in summer.
The custom of eating Minazuki is said to have originated in the Heian era when the aristocrats were given ice by the Imperial Palace. However, as ice was something which the commoners had no way of obtaining, they resorted to making the Minazuki wagashi to look like ice which then led to the proliferation of this custom.
This confectionary is not the traditional Minazuki but represents the fragment of ice and cool water for hot summer in Japan.
