This mustache pencil belonged to John Waters, an irreverent artist, author, and filmmaker. Waters is known for films like “Hairspray” and “Pink Flamingos.” Waters’ mustache pencil is currently on display in our next exhibit “Illegal to be You: Gay History Beyond Stonewall.” You check out our pinned “Behind the Scenes” story to see mountmaker Laura McClure prepare the pencil for exhibition.
Waters mustache pencil tells the story of how self-expression and humor help some members of the LGBTQ community navigate being different, when being different can be dangerous.
