Galapagos marine iguanas are the world's only ocean going lizards. They graze on cold water seaweeds and increases in sea temperature (during El Niño events) have detrimental effects: Warm water = No nutritious seaweeds = Dead marine iguanas! In this photograph a living marine iguana is juxtaposed with the desiccated carcass of a compatriot that probably starved to death. Climate change is predicted to make El Niño events more frequent and severe and marine iguanas could become the first of the Galapagos’s iconic animals to disappear.
