We had only been taking photos in Fahiem’s office for a few minutes when Fawad’s patience began to wear thin. Fahiem gave a shake of his head, signaling that a meltdown was imminent and the portrait session was over. While his office was kind enough to let us take photos amid his colleagues in the call center, we couldn’t have Fawad shouting in the background while clients dialed in to discuss their loans. I quickly gathered up my camera gear, said a rushed thank you and made for the elevator. On the street below, Fahiem seemed less rattled. “I think Fawad’s ok for another couple photos, if you want to try,” he said. Awkwardly holding a giant studio light in one hand and a camera in the other, I took a few last shots.

As photographers with UNICEF, we’re only able to do our jobs insofar as people grant us access to their homes and their lives – which is a great privilege. During my days with Fahiem, Fawad and their family, they opened not only their doors to me, but their hearts. What I hope we as photojournalists and documentary photographers are out to do is to document the way things are, not the way we want them to be. Not every portrait has to have a smile. In this photograph what I see is dignity and love, perhaps tinged with a note of exhaustion. Working with a photographer is a tiring affair, and to all the children and parents around the world who give their time and share their lives with UNICEF and its many photographers, I’d like to say thank you. #EarlyMomentsMatter
