Fought over the first three days of July 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg in #Pennsylvania was the bloodiest battle of the #CivilWar. On those hills and fields, over 160,000 soldiers struggled to survive. More than 50,000 were killed, wounded or missing. Preserved as #Gettysburg National Military Park, visitors can hear their stories and walk in their footsteps. After Gettysburg the north knew it couldn't lose, and the south refused to accept that it had lost. I can see why it was fought up till that battle, but everything that came after was tragic, and bitter. We had two civil wars here, the wars of the roses and the two Parliamentary wars, and the bitterness was savage. I'm glad you only had to suffer one.

Every year, my husband watches the movie on the anniversary. Day 1 on day 1 and so forth......even when I was in the hospital having our first born...he brought Gettysburg with him. When we visited the park a few years ago, he was like a kid going to Disney for the first time. Gettysburg will always have a special place in our family.

An amazing park. An amazing, sad, interesting, fascinating, troubling story. The after story is fascinating too - what happened to the town and countryside after the armies left and what they left behind. Go learn something about war and sacrifice and compassion.

Jacob Mishler and my great-great grandfather, Adam Shaffer we’re in that battle together. Jacob later introduced his sister, Caroline, to Adam and they eventually got married. Puts a different slant on things for me.

Incredible photo of a very interesting place.? We've been there a number of times and have ridden horses across the battlefield. It's eerie because you feel the presence of the fallen.

I have always found Gettysburg to be very moving. It is amazing to stand on that hallowed ground and remember what happened there, and the men who fought and died so valiantly.
