Photo by Ami Vitale @amivitale | Esala Perahera is the grand festival held in July and August in Kandy, Sri Lanka. This historical procession is held annually to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. A unique symbol of Sri Lanka, the procession consists of many traditional local dances, including fire-dances, Kandyan dances, and various other cultural dances.

For thousands of years, there has been a unique blending of cultures and religions on the island, until civil war disrupted it. I had the privilege of working in Sri Lanka for @ナショナルジオグラフィック as we looked at the memory of that 26-year civil war, which ended in 2009.
