While nobody knows what will become of life, it is important that each of us is aware and plays an active role in our own transformation. This is the message that 82-year-old French scientist Joël de Rosnay wants to share with the world. De Rosnay studied under Nobel Prize winner Jacques Monod (who called him “mon petit Joël”), worked as a research associate at MIT in Boston, and headed up research applications at Institut Pasteur in Paris. According to de Rosnay, the only way we can gain control of our own future is by working directly on the genome, activating some genes while inhibiting others but without really modifying them. This is called epigenetics. “Epi” means “outside of” and epigenetics, which is an area of science that hasn’t been explored much, governs genetics from outside. If human beings are based on a “program” of DNA then epigenetics is a “metaprogram” that, depending on our behavior and the way we relate to the environment, allows for changing, reinforcing, or inhibiting individual genes without modifying the DNA sequence. This happens much the way we turn up the volume on the radio or the way a symphony orchestra interprets notes - genes - on a score.
