Repost from @mohammedjamjoom - I spent the day reporting on news that the US is imposing sanctions on Myanmar’s military Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing and three other military leaders due to their role in the “ethnic cleansing”. Here’s what I can tell you with absolute certainty: The #Rohingya feel brutalized by what happened to them in Myanmar and they feel abused by the international community. Every Rohingya #refugee I spoke with today told me the decision to sanction those military leaders is both significant and encouraging, but that this should have happened much sooner. They also wonder why the US continues to refer to the atrocities they suffered as “ethnic cleansing” when even UN investigators believe Myanmar’s military leaders should be prosecuted for “genocide.” Here’s part of a segment I did for @aljazeeraenglish.
