"The work...is really about the blood, the violence of genocide in America and the native resilience to survive the genocide." – Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds
…
See the work of #EdgarHeapofBirds in his exhibition "Surviving Active Shooter Custer," now on view at @MoMAPS1. For more than three decades, Heap of Birds of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Nation, has worked as an artist, activist, and teacher. Based in Oklahoma City and on tribal land, where he has lived since 1981, he consistently creates works that confront repressed or unacknowledged histories of state and settler violence against Native communities in the United States.

We’re keeping MoMA PS1 open late just for our members next Wednesday, July 24. Explore this exhibition and more at #MoMAmember After Hours: mo.ma/afterhours (link in bio)

Listening to #EdgarHeapofBirds talk about his work projects the ordinarily 2D contents into amazing dimensions that draw one into its performative sculptural and experiential field. His descriptions are important expansive sides of each work! He is his art and he makes anyone that encounter them feel same too. That dimension is near infinite.

Art is very much about communication and your culture. I do not hear much in the way of Indian American voices here. I know your traditional textiles and jewellery are beautiful and you fought bravely yet we hear little I guess it’s up to Institutions like this and everybody being aware too. Do you have land rights there?

@laurentiutodie Thinking? Yours isn't based on extensive research and you treat genocide like a numbers game. May that disrespect return to you tenfold.

May the Creator bless and keep you in your wonderful work - Voices need to be heard-especially in these troubled times -
