Fifty years after the lunar landing, as we contemplate colonizing remote planets and reaching distant stars, the legend and legacy of the Soviet space dog Laika ought to give us pause. Tap the link in our bio to read about the fate of the canine cosmonaut who blazed the path to the moon. Photograph by Sputnik / Alamy.

It is sad, but the reality is that her contribution, as unwilling as it may have been, is what made space exploration safer for human astronauts. There is no progress without sacrifice. And it should be noted, that many cosmonauts died in the early days of space exploration, and in some cases we only learned about those losses after the fall of the Soviet Union. Their sacrifice was all so terrible, but unnecessary steps in our eventual exploration of other worlds.

That’s right NYT... we shouldn’t dare to allow people to feel good about the incredible accomplishment of the US. Certainly, redirect attention. People who are different might actually agree about something, and you shouldn’t let that happen! Good work.
