Photo by @paulnicklen | Unseen in a cenote near Tulum: a few feet below the surface of the water lie the remnants of an ancient culture and clues to ritual hidden in time. Over a hundred Mayan people were found buried in Las Calaveras ("the skulls"); archaeologists examine their skulls and bones to discover the secrets of their deaths, and gain a better understanding of how they came to be there. I have never been so aware of every inch of my body, camera and fins while hovering just inches above this incredibly delicate and important site. For the Maya, both caves and cenotes were considered mouths that opened into another world. Today, this is a popular destination for cooling off after a long hike through the rainforest, nearby the pyramid at Cobá. In this photo, local guide Angel Canul ascends a rope ladder after checking to make sure every tourist has safely left the cenote.
