This is a negative image of a handprint, one of the oldest signs to appear in caves. They were most common during the earlier parts of the Ice Age (between 22,000 and 40,000 years ago). To make them, early humans would place their hand on a cave wall and spit paint over and around it. While scientists don’t definitively know the meaning of the image, some theorize that it was an early form of sign language or made to state “I am here.” The negative handprint is one of 32 signs repeatedly used by our ancestors across Europe, as documented by paleoarchaeologist and @TEDFellow Genevieve von Petzinger. No, rather than being 'spat on', it was applied by flicking the bristles of an animal hind covered in wet and colourful material - presumably a clay compound. It was thus applied as a territorial brand of ownership; an owner's print could be matched to their hand in any territorial dispute, thereby easily settling most disputes. Witness testimony and heritage settled the rest.

Do we have any evidence that they would spit over and around it? Did they find DNA?They maybe used tools like our straws? Or leaves like a pad? For example, if you spit on a wall it would pour... This image is suite regular and harmonious.

Really interesting article. Great to see new thoughts applied to old things too. Sometimes a fresh perspective sheds light on things differently enough to reveal deeper understandings that weren't, or couldn't have been seen before.
