We stan an em dash. But why do people care so much about a piece of — no offense — punctuation? Grammar nerds sound off below.

emgates I just learned about the em dash about 3 weeks ago. I mean I knew about dashes and how they are used (not to ever be confused with a hyphen) but has no idea it was a particular genre of dash and why it’s called an em dash. Fascinating. Ever since that fateful day, they’ve continued to pop up everywhere. #emdashisthenewblack

auradis I like the em dash in theory but career magazine writers overuse and abuse it....editing their writing is 😪 there’s such a thing as too many in one paragraph!!
