Meet Herman the Vancouver Island marmot @thetorontozoo. This species is one of only six mammals endemic to Canada, and as its name suggests, it can only be found on Vancouver Island. Over the last several decades, habitat alteration has steadily reduced the number of wild marmots - in 2003, only 30 individuals remained in the wild. The Vancouver Island Marmot Recovery Team determined that a captive breeding and reintroduction program was the only way to save the species from extinction, and ever since, the Toronto Zoo has been a partner in captive breeding efforts. Just a few months ago, the zoo announced the birth of 13 marmot pups, marking the second year in a row that over a dozen pups were born. In time, these young marmots will be released into the wild and help to boost the recovering population even more. Thanks to these incredible efforts, over 200 wild Vancouver Island marmots now occupy dozens of mountain meadows, including some where the marmots had been historically wiped out. #marmot #vancouverisland #captivebreeding #reintroduction #cute #PhotoArk #savetogether
