New Guinea Singing dogs, like many other “exotic” type pets have a long list of reasons why they don’t make the best companion animal for most people. Many exotics are actually not very different from those in the wild. Just because an animal has been captive bred, does not mean it is more compatible with living in a home or being a pet. For example, pet foxes sold by breeders come from fur farms (typically) and those foxes have been selectively bred for their fur quality and color, not temperament. Even the Russian domesticated foxes, which have been selectively bred for temperament are destructive little buggers!!! .
There is so much more as to why dogs are man’s BFF vs being captive bred or even domesticated. Dogs are extremely unique in their relationship with people and this relationship combined with who and what dogs are make them amazing companion animals. The NGSDs have not been selectively bred for likely over 5000 years. It is likely they were brought to New Guinea by people; however lived like wild canids in the highlands. Not like feral or village dogs. Living without the help or interference of people. We consider them domestication version 1.... and being primitive dogs, come with a whole host of non desirable behaviors that one must be aware of before bringing them into their home. .
As you can see by this video, these little adorable brats have decided to eat the couch. This isn’t the first and is part of a whole plethora of destroyed items throughout the house.... sure they are still young, and our elder singers have gotten over THIS behavior, but as I went to bed last night, one of them jumped on the bed and decided to mark (by peeing) on my pillows..... 🙄🤷‍♀️ .
It is what you sign up for when you bring an exotic or primitive animal into your life. Many, way too many, people abandon their domesticated dogs, let alone an exotic.... there aren’t shelter to take exotics to, you can’t sell them (legally unless you have proper permits), they must be a lifelong commitment you make...
